COVID-19/Coronavirus Update

Dear Parents of 2020 Portsmouth Little League Players,

I am writing to update you on the current status of playing Little League baseball this year. The Board has met twice to discuss the upcoming season and how we can offer a baseball program to the children in our communities.

Our goal is to try and offer a baseball season as soon as the Portsmouth fields are released and the Governor permits outside recreation for team sports. When/if this happens, we will implement the distancing and other requirements specified in the guidelines. At a minimum, the changes you can expect are: temperature/symptom checks for all players/coaches/umpires before each game, small team sizes, use of face masks for players while in the dugout or extended dugout areas, extending the dugout space for the team at-bat along the right and left field fences, use of face masks by field umpire and adult coaches, no team huddles during games, use of the baseball mitt as a face covering by players on defense when conducting meetings on the mound, no concessions, requirements for distancing by all spectators, only one person/family in the announcing booth, as well as any other requirements specified for outdoor team sports.

We have devised flexible schedules that include 1 week of pre-season practices, 3 weeks of scrimmage/regular season games, 2 weeks of round robin play and a championship for each division. Each division will hold its own championship games and those games may be played on different days depending on the size of the division. In an ideal situation and with our current registration numbers, we would begin in early June and finish the season in mid-July. The schedule provides for beginning and ending later. For this season, we would not be offering a summer sandlot program – rather our regular season will be played in the summer months.

While there is no regional or international tournament this year, the NH districts are planning to offer an invitational tournament for league all-star teams beginning in mid-July and ending no later than mid-August. We are most focused on offering this opportunity for 12 year olds who are in their last year of Little League.

Big Al is providing free instructional videos for parents of players to stay fit and learn baseball skills. To have a quick look at what the programs include, please watch the 2 short Parent Videos on the front page of www.bigalbaseball.com. If you want to use this resource, an article on the front page of the PLL website for the password and logon process will be posted soon.

Of most importance in our planning is knowing how many players will participate in the season this year. To that end, please complete the following survey to help us plan for a potential season in 2020. Questions about participation, refunds/donations/accounts, are interleague travel are included on the survey. The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2020PLLsurvey

Thank you
