Portsmouth's 11U District Team moves to 3-1 on the season after a high-scoring, 12-11 win over Mt. Monadnock at Hislop Field in Portsmouth on Tuesday evening.
Portsmouth got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after taking advantage of two lead off walks. A ground out by Nolan Malinowski scored Angus McCafferty. Josh Miller and Rory O'Brien were able to score on passed balls.
Mt. Monadnock took the lead, 5-3, in the top of the third, but Portsmouth came back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on two hits to take a 10-8 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by O'Brien that allowed three to score.
In the top of the sixth inning, Mt. Monadnock scored three runs, but Portsmouth was able to scratch two runs across for a walk-off win.
Defensively, Miller led things off on the bump for Portsmouth. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and five runs (four earned) over two and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking five. Malinowski, Pierce Gillen and O'Brien each appeared in relief for Portsmouth. O'Brien stepped in with bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth and quickly got two Mt. Monadnock batters to go down on strikes giving his team the best opportunity for a late rally.
